Software Spotlight: Bitwarden

Bitwarden is an open-source password manager that is cross-platform, 3rd party audited, and end-to-end encrypted. It has a built-in configurable password generator, and can be used for individual, family, or business purposes. It has desktop applications, web-browser extensions, and smart phone apps so you can ensure your passwords and sensitive data are safe and accessible from any of your devices.

Many people today use the same password for many or all of their online accounts; the people that don't often change a single character of their password. 2 of 3 people still rely on their memory to recall passwords while 1 in 5 need to reset their passwords at least once a week. At Nottingham Nerds, we recommend to our customers that they know almost none of their passwords. In practice, we recommend that our customers only know the login credentials to their computer, cell phone, and Bitwarden - and that's it! Everything else should be in Bitwarden for safe keeping to ensure that every password is different (and securely generated - not memorable), and that they never use the same password. We also recommend that our customers use two-step authentication whenever and wherever possible (especially on Bitwarden - you wouldn't want someone getting into the account and getting a full directory listing of all of your accounts!).

Bitwarden also has a feature called Send which allows users to transmit encrypted information to others, and it too is configurable; it allows you to set a deletion date, expiration date, password (data is encrypted either way, just an extra layer of protection, personal notes, and maximum access counts to fine-tune access to files/text data up to 100MB in size. We use this quite a bit for sending sensitive data to customers and within the company, it is quite handy!

At Nottingham Nerds, we use Bitwarden to keep all of our login credentials safe and secure and we recommend this service to all of our customers. We are currently exploring options to become a managed service provider for our customers, both individuals and small businesses. Keep an eye out for updates on this!
