Software Spotlight: ProtonVPN Linux GUI app!
ProtonVPN has been supported on Linux for a couple of years now. At first, we had a community created command line interface program that allowed us the necessities in order to login and use ProtonVPN services. In 2020, ProtonVPN released an official version of that program with a similar command line interface (CLI) which also included it's killswitch technology as well as added features like the network manager entry and the added icon in the taskbar area. Many of us in the Linux world were patiently waiting for a graphical user interface (GUI) application, but we can't blame Proton... they are simultaneously building end-to-end encrypted services for VPN, E-mail, Calendar, Contacts, Drive, and maintaining clients for every major operating system.
We are happy to announce, for those that aren't aware yet, on June 22nd ProtonVPN released that long awaited GUI application to the Linux operating system. We are overwhelmed with joy because this makes using ProtonVPN services much easier for many users, and is honestly a rare thing because most VPN services treat Linux as an afterthought or never even release anything to us.
Features included in this new application are:
- Quick Connect
- NetShield Ad-blocker
- Kill Switch
- Secure Core (Paid users)
- DNS leak protection
- IPv6 leak protection
- Easy access to Peer-to-Peer (P2P), TOR, and streaming servers (Paid users)
- Linux desktop integration (via Network Manager)
- Available for all ProtonVPN users!
Please keep in mind, the old community CLI version is no longer supported by ProtonVPN, so if you're still using it make sure you update at least to the official CLI application or to the new GUI application!
